Rebecca Orton- Coventriert

Rebecca Orton is a documentary photographer based in the Midlands, England who has just completed her photography degree from University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey.

Orton’s practice is influenced by her interest in history. Coventriert was inspired by her home town’s destruction during the Blitz, changing the medieval city of Coventry into a concrete jungle. This work combines extracts from J.B. Shelton’s book, A Night in Little Park Street with Orton’s own photographs. The text gives a first-hand account of Shelton’s experience on the 14th/15th November 1940, Coventry’s most famous night. The highly descriptive text dramatically contrasts the quiet and simplistic photographs. Each photograph is of a location in Coventry, either an area targeted by the Luftwaffe or an area that has played a large role in people’s memory of the Coventry Blitz. These two components come together to create a cohesive narrative depicting Coventry’s past and present as one. Orton is continuing to explore the destruction caused to individual lives within a greater historical context, focusing on other cities experiences during The Second World War.
